Help the Victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan
The BBC has reported that Philippine President Benigno Aquino has declared a state of national calamity to speed relief efforts for victims of Typhoon Haiyan. More than 600,000 people have been displaced and as many as 9.8 million people may be impacted by this superstorm; 5 million are children. Many are now struggling to survive without food, shelter or clean drinking water. This is just after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck some provinces in the Visayas region that also destroyed property and cultural heritage, and took precious lives. Compounding these effects is the current civil war taking place in Mindanao. Damage to roads and airports has delayed the delivery of aid.
Children of the Earth’s chapter leaders in the Philippines, Mark Conrad Rivero and Christian Rivero, leaders of a youth-oriented group called I am M.A.D. (Making A Difference), are on the ground, now, personally volunteering in the relief operations being done by the government and private organizations. They are eagerly collecting donations to be delivered in the form of basic food and water needs and medical supplies given directly to the children affected by this devastating tragedy.
