43rd Anniversary of Earth Day

On April 22, 2013, more than one billion people around the world will take part in the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day. From Beijing to Cairo, Melbourne to London, Rio to Johannesburg, New Delhi to New York, communities everywhere will voice their concerns for the planet, and take action to protect it.

Robert M. Weir, Writer, Author, Editor and Speaker, shares about the Earth Day Celebration at the United Nations:

The United Nations has been holding an annual event for Earth Day since the vernal equinox in 1971. The original Earth Day started one year earlier in 1970. The host organization is the NGO Earth Society Foundation. It is sponsored by UNESCO.

The highlight of the ceremony is the ringing of the Peace Bell at the moment of equipoise, which, this year, is 7:02 am.

The founder of the annual event was visionary John McConnell, who also founded the Earth Society Foundation, created the Earth Flag, and has several other credits to his name. John McConnell's vision for Earth Day was to establish "nature's global holiday" on the day that, for most of the world's citizens, is associated with the beginning of spring, rebirth, and renewal. He announced Earth Day at a United Nations meeting in San Francisco in October 1969.
 
Mr. McConnell passed this past October, so part of this year’s program will include a tribute to him. There will also be speakers and  musical performances. The ceremony will take place around the Peace Bell.
